A huge blitz to remove rubbish from the Yarra River will be one of the first actions of an elected Liberal Nationals Government.
828 million pieces of litter flow into Melbourne’s Port Phillip Bay from the Yarra and Maribyrnong Rivers each year.
A Liberal National Government will set a goal of reducing the amount of rubbish entering the Bay by 50 percent over a five-year period.
A Matthew Guy-led Government will fund the use of boat-based suction equipment for rubbish removal from the Yarra River to remove tonnes of rubbish.
The Yarra River is one of Melbourne’s most important natural assets, and is the centrepiece of many cultural, sporting and recreational activities. It provides 70 percent of our piped water, and its valley is world renowned for its vineyards and natural beauty.
Parks Victoria currently maintains a number of litter traps along the river, and whilst they are reasonably successful, they do not capture litter accumulated along the banks.
There are currently a number of mechanisms and organisations in place to manage this important waterway including the Yarra River Protection (Wilip-gin Birrarung murron) Act 2017, Melbourne Water’s Healthy Waterways Strategy, and the Yarra Riverkeeper Association also plays a role in protecting the health of the river.
This commitment for boat-based suction rubbish removal will not only mean a cleaner Yarra River, it will also improve the health of Hobsons and Port Phillip Bays.
Comments attributable to Shadow Minster for Environment, Nick Wakeling:
“One of the first things I will do as Minister for Environment in a Liberal Nationals Government is for a blitz to remove rubbish from the Yarra River.
“As Melbourne’s population grows we need to work harder to keep the Yarra River healthy which is why our plan to use state of the art equipment such as boat-based suction equipment for rubbish removal is so important.
“We don’t get second chances when it comes to protecting the environment and that’s why a blitz to clean the Yarra River is one of the first things we will do.”
Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Prahran, Katie Allen:
“The Yarra River is a much loved part of the Prahran electorate as a place for locals and visitors to enjoy for recreation and entertainment.
“Sadly, the River has been neglected for too long, with tonnes of litter making its way into our waterways and bays.
“This investment in the Yarra will make this iconic Melbourne river a cleaner, greener, and more enjoyable environment for everyone.”
